News From the Garden

The Lake Trail Community Garden looks amazing right now. We have been harvesting food to serve to staff and students during the weekly salad bar and strawberries are ripe and ready to be used by the Home. Ec. Program at Lake Trail. Come visit during regular open hours, Sundays from noon to 4 pm, Tuesday’s from 3 to 6, to help out. Or attend one of our gardening classes-

Planting for Winter Gardening  June 26 Monday 6:30 – 8pm

Planting for winter harvest starts in July. This class will guide you through the planting calendar for winter and spring harvest. Best varieties for overwintering, mulching weather protection, where and how much to grow to ensure great winter eats will all be covered.

Tomato Pruning Workshop  Sunday July 9 1 – 3 pm

Growing great tomatoes is an art. Proper pruning techniques are learned skill. This workshop is intended to increase you confidence and your yields with good summer management techniques.

Summer Fruit Tree Pruning Demo with Karen Cummins  Sunday July 23 OR July 31

Summer pruning is weather dependent. A hot dry day is ideal for a quick seal on cuts to prevent fungal infections. We will be watching the weather closely and will contact participants to confirm dates the week of the demo.

Karen Cummins is an ISA certified Arborist and a Horticulturist. She has extensive training and a wealth of experience in sustainable landscape design and organic garden management.

Salad Nights:  Tuesdays 3:15 to 7:30 pm  Free!

This Summer our regular Tuesday evening gardening sessions take on new flavour!

Bring your bowl and fork for a guided pick and eat tour of the Lake Trail School Garden. Picking salad into your bowl directly from the garden is fresh eating that cannot be matched. LTNC will provide trimmings and dressing or bring your own if you have a favourite. Everything else is provided by the abundance of the garden.

Bring the whole family. Salad picking start at 5:30 or 6 pm
